Laurie Scott Calls on Ontario Government
to Protect Water Supply
Today,
Haliburton-Victoria-Brock MPP Laurie Scott rose in the legislature
to warn the McGuinty government about the water supply crisis that
could develop there is a municipal strike. “I am surprised
that the Ministry has not been working more closely with the Municipality
before now to make sure there would be a contingency plan in place”,
said Laurie Scott
She
urged the minister to mandate the Ontario Clean Water Agency to
take over control of the water supply in the event of a strike.
“I call upon the government and the Minister of the Environment
to put an emergency action plan into place to make sure that the
people of the City of Kawartha Lakes will not see their water quality
compromised.”
The
current rules allow the government to mandate the Ontario Clean
Water Agency to operate the water systems. This solution would allow
local residents the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they
will have access to clean and safe water.
“Can
you imagine running a hospital without clean water”, Laurie
Scott asked the government. “This is not a labour relations
issue - It is a health and safety issue.”
