Laurie
Scott Stands Up For “Orphaned” Patients
Asks why people have to pay large amounts to transfer their medical.

Yesterday, Laurie Scott MPP, Haliburton-Victoria-Brock stood up
in the legislature to draw attention to a problem facing many people
in the Minden area.
The
recent retirement of a local doctor has made “orphans”
of his former patients. They have had to work hard to try to find
a new family doctor, with many of them having to go to Bancroft
or Bracebridge to find a physician who would be willing to add them
to their patient roster.
When
these people tried to transfer their medical records, they found
that they had to pay in order to have the file contents transferred.
This charge is sometimes as high as $175.00 per file. This type
of charge is very difficult for many people to pay. It is especially
difficult for the many seniors living on fixed incomes who are asked
to pay these amounts.
“I
worry about what will happen when a new doctor comes to Minden,”
said Laurie Scott. Will these people have to pay again when they
move their files to their new doctor”?
In
underserviced communities, when a doctor retires, or their practice
closes patients are left orphaned. This is not something that is
the fault of the patient, but they are being left to foot the bill
when their files are transferred to their new doctor.
“I
have written to the Minister of Health and Long Term Care asking
him to investigate this and to contact the College of Physicians
and Surgeons to ask them why patients are being hit with this cost,”
Laurie Scott said.
