Laurie Scott Welcomes the Election of P.C. Leader John Tory
Laurie Scott, Haliburton-Victoria-Brock MPP, today expressed her
enthusiasm about the decisive victory won last night by Progressive
Conservative Party Leader, John Tory.
“Not
only have the voters of Dufferin-Peel-Wellington-Grey elected a
terrific MPP,” said Laurie Scott. “They have also sent
a strong message to Premier McGuinty by electing John Tory with
over 56 percent of the overall vote. I am excited by the chance
to serve alongside John when he takes his seat. I am confident that
he will be tremendously effective in his new role.”
Since
becoming leader earlier this year, John Tory has been fighting for
farmers, for students, for seniors and for ordinary Ontarians from
outside of the legislature. As a MPP and the Leader of the Official
Opposition, he will be even more effective at holding the government
to account.
John
Tory won his seat with 56.3 percent of the vote, compared to 16.7
percent for the Liberal candidate. On March 29, 2005 he will be
sworn in as MPP for the riding and become the Leader of the Official
Opposition at Queen's Park
In
his victory speech, he told his supporters “You have said,
and I will join you in saying this over and over again, that a premier
who doesn’t keep his word is a premier who shouldn’t
keep his job.” Tory told the crowd that he believes politicians
must do better. "I am personally determined to do better and
to do everything I can to bring more honesty and decency to the
political process," Tory said. "Politicians can be straightforward
and can do what they say they are going to do."
