MPP Scott Hosts Roundtable Meeting with Local Business Groups to Promote Small Businesses
(Lindsay, ON) In light of the challenges local small businesses are faced with resulting from issues such as cross-border shopping and the strong Canadian dollar, MPP Laurie Scott (Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock) was pleased to facilitate a well-attended roundtable discussion this morning, despite Mother Nature trying to slow things down with snow and ice.
“It is paramount that we bring awareness and support to our local business community,” said Scott. “There are a variety of issues causing some major challenges and I felt it was important to get together with local business representatives to identify these challenges and discuss possible solutions.”
Scott invited representatives from the Chambers’ of Commerce of Fenelon Falls, Lindsay and Bobcaygeon; as well as the Omemee Business & Community Improvement Association and the Lindsay Business Improvement Association. Mayor Rick McGee, a representative from MP Barry Devolin’s office, along with Don Anderson of the local Business Development Bank of Canada office all participated in the discussion.
“Facilitating this meeting was an excellent first step to discuss and share some valuable ideas in order to promote and support local business,” said Frank Kinzinger of the Fenelon Falls Chamber of Commerce immediately following the meeting.
“Buy Local is a great example of promotion for our agriculture industry, and it certainly should also apply equally to the products and services provided by our businesses,” added Scott. “Throughout the year, especially at this time, it’s important that our local entrepreneurs, who supply so many jobs and contribute so much to our economy, know that we are supporting their work and their commitment to our community.”
Part of the discussions revolved around an immediate city-wide ad campaign to support local retailers; along with exploring various avenues for funding and the need for a full-time city-wide co-ordinater to assist with the needs of our local businesses.
“The consensus from the table seemed to be that a team effort is required from all levels in the community, with the municipality taking a lead role,” said Scott.
Scott also indicated she will be providing a summary of today’s meeting to Ontario’s Minister of Finance along with the Minister of Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
