MPP LAURIE SCOTT SPEAKS OUT FOR INCREASED CARE FOR THE ELDERLY

(City of Kawartha Lakes, ON) Member of Provincial Parliament Laurie Scott (Haliburton–Kawartha Lakes–Brock) welcomed front-line care givers picketing in front of her Lindsay office on Thursday afternoon, who were there to press Premier Dalton McGuinty to provide better care for the elderly.

“Over four years ago the McGuinty Liberals promised a “Revolution” in long term care in Ontario where seniors would be treated with respect and dignity,” said Scott. “Today’s events prove once again that Dalton McGuinty and his Minister of Health are failing Ontario seniors and compromising their quality of life.”

Scott, who is also the Opposition Critic for the Ministry of Health Promotion, pointed to the fact there isn’t enough resources to adequately address the needs of residents in long term care homes; this includes a growing waiting list for long term care beds in the riding.

Scott also indicated that the Long Term Care Act, which received royal assent over eight months ago, has yet to be proclaimed into law by the McGuinty Liberal government.

“Residents of long term care homes, along with their families and their dedicated caregivers deserve much more than lip service and empty promises from this government,” said Scott. “They need the assurance that the government is working to meet the demands of our aging population and provide our most vulnerable citizens with a clean, safe, and caring environment.”
