McGUINTY DELAYS ACTION ON ENVIRONMENT AGAIN
Flip Flops on MPP Scott’s Legislation from over 14 months
ago
(Toronto, ON) – Laurie Scott, PC Environment Critic responded
to Minister of Transportation Donna Cansfield who is planning to
re-introduce Scott’s proposed legislation and noted the McGuinty
government continues to pretend to care for the environment after
nearly four years of inaction and broken promises.
“My speed limiters bill passed first and second reading and
was supported by members of all parties in the legislature,”
said Scott. “Not only did Dalton McGuinty refuse to move forward
and bring it to committee, his own Minister of Health came into
the legislature at the eleventh hour to vote against it.”
In May of 2006 Scott introduced legislation through Bill 115, which
proposed speed limiters on transport trucks that would limit them
to 105 kilometres per hour. The trucking industry has indicated
this would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a minimum of 140 kilotonnes
per year, significantly reduce fuel consumption and improve safety
on Ontario highways.
“I think the fact the Phil McNeely, the Parliamentary Assistant
to the Minister of Transportation spoke quite critically of the
bill and voted against it, speaks volumes,” added Scott. “It
certainly appears that, now that an election is near, Dalton McGuinty
and his team have had a change of heart.”
“This once again shows the McGuinty Liberals as nothing more
than paper environmentalists,” said Scott. “Dalton McGuinty
has hopelessly avoided his environmental responsibilities and broken
his promises for nearly four years. Now on the eve of an election
he’s decided to kick a concept out the door that he has allowed
to languish in the legislature for more than a year, and which his
own Minister of Health doesn’t support. McGuinty has flip-flopped
on support for this important legislation and the environment has
suffered.”
