HAPPY CANADA DAY
MPP Laurie Scott celebrates Canada’s 140th Birthday
(Beaverton, ON) On Sunday, July 1st proud Canadians throughout Ontario
and all of Canada will be celebrating the 140th birthday of the
Dominion of Canada.
“I would like to wish all of my constituents a Happy Canada
Day,” said Member of Provincial Parliament Laurie Scott (Haliburton-Victoria-Brock.)
“Our Nation’s 140th birthday is a time to reflect on
how proud we can be to live in the great province of Ontario, and
in the greatest country on earth, Canada.”
A proclamation signed in 1868 by the Governor General, Lord Monck,
called upon all Her Majesty’s loving subjects throughout Canada
to join in the celebration of the formation of the union of the
British North America Provinces in a federation under the name of
Canada on July 1. This holiday was established by statute in 1879
and referred to as “Dominion Day.”
In October of 1982 what was known as “Dominion Day”
became “Canada Day.”
“Canada is recognized throughout the world for its great
history of being a peace-serving, opportunity building nation,”
added Scott. “For that reason Canada Day is also a time to
pay tribute to our military woman and men who are proudly and bravely
upholding our nation’s reputation today both here and abroad.”
Scott also took the opportunity to remind people to be safe in
their travels this long weekend. “Our roadways and waterways
are going to be busy with vacationers and tourists over the long
weekend. We can all do our part by being extra cautious and watching
for children.”
