AGRICULTURE CRITIC ERNIE HARDEMAN JOINS MPP SCOTT FOR MEETING WITH LOCAL PRODUCERS
(City of Kawartha Lakes, ON) MPP Laurie Scott (Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock) welcomed MPP Ernie Hardeman (Oxford), the Official Opposition Critic for Agriculture, to Lindsay today for a meeting with a number of local agriculture producers.
“The hardworking farmers MPP Scott and I met with this morning said it loud and clear - Dalton McGuinty needs to do much more for our agriculture industry,” said Hardeman. “Agriculture producers can’t simply pick up their farms and move; they need a government that’s dedicated to working within the industry to provide forward-thinking policies and create a climate where our producers are given the tools to flourish.”
Scott added, “The challenges facing rural Ontario and our farming communities are not new and are not unique to this area. Our local producers are working very hard on behalf of the various commodities and they need a government that is willing to respond by working with them and backing them up with solid, fair, and long-term support to compete in the marketplace both here and abroad.”
Producers in various agriculture industries have indicated that they are struggling with high-production costs and a high Canadian dollar. Hog farmers are facing the worst crisis in their farming history.
“With the struggles so many of us are trying to work through, it was very encouraging to discuss with Mr. Hardeman some of the solutions we feel will assist us,” said Todd Malcolm, a Kawartha Lakes hog and crop farmer who joined the meeting. “Both he and MPP Scott are committed to bringing our concerns to the Minister of Agriculture and we hope the Minister will react by moving forward quickly in order to help our industries.”
Scott also took Hardeman for a tour of the new Lindsay Exhibition Fairgrounds as well meeting with vendors at the East Central Farm Show.
“Laurie Scott has told me wonderful things about the new Lindsay fairgrounds and insisted I come for a tour,” added Hardeman. “The folks here have done an incredible job providing the surrounding area with some exciting new event opportunities such as the East Central Farm Show, along with the annual Lindsay Fall Fair.”
