MPP LAURIE SCOTT ENCOURAGES “LIGHTS OUT” FOR “EARTH HOUR”

(Queen’s Park, Toronto ON)  MPP Laurie Scott (Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock) is encouraging the people of the riding to participate in “Earth Hour” by turning out or dimming their lights on Saturday, March 29th for one hour, between 8 and 9 p.m.

“For most of us, this is a very small task that can have huge benefits,” said Scott. “While the lights are out we will be reducing the demand on the power grid, but I think it’s also an opportune time for us to consider the vital role that energy conservation has on our environment.”

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and this year the event has world-wide participation.  An estimated 2.2 million Australians participated in 2007 which reduced the demand on the country’s power grid by an estimated 10 per cent.

The Provincial Legislature at Queen’s Park will also be participating in “Earth Hour.”

“In my time as the Opposition Environment Critic it became clear that Ontarians are becoming more conscious of what repercussions our actions have on the environment,” added Scott.  “I am pleased to help spread the word and the challenge to the residents of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock and am confident that we’ll do our part to make Ontario and Canada a global leader on March 29th.”
