McGuinty’s Budget - More Spending – Less Priorities

(Queen’s Park, Toronto) – Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock is concerned that, once again, Dalton McGuinty has ignored the needs of rural Ontario.

“There is a tremendous need in our rural communities for Dalton McGuinty to make a real commitment and stop ignoring the warning signs,” said Scott.  “Our small business, manufacturing and agricultural sectors, despite their pleas for long-term sustainability and a climate of less tax and more incentives, year after year are being ignored by this Liberal government.”

“Our farmers have been left struggling, and continue to be offered no plan by this government.”

Scott also referred to the Liberals penchant of applying one-off band-aids for infrastructure needs in rural Ontario.

“To help get on the right track, rural communities need the assurance of long-term, fixed funding programs to deal with crumbling infrastructure,” said Scott.  “At this point they’re left hoping for the Liberal government to offer some of the cash leftover at the end of the year, if there is any.”

The budget also leaves Ontario’s long term care residents and their families waiting for the millions and millions of dollars they have been asking for.

“Four years ago McGuinty promised a revolution in Long Term Care and once again our most vulnerable seniors have been left in the dark.  This is on top of the outrageous insult by the Minister of Health who has suggested he would wear a diaper,” added Scott.  “Dalton McGuinty has virtually ignored the needs of long-term care residents, their families and their dedicated caregivers and as a result seniors continue to suffer while there is a growing waiting list in the riding.”

Scott also mentioned that, despite the Federal government’s commitment to funding for a rail line from Toronto to Peterborough, the Ontario Finance Minister has not made one mention of this in the Provincial budget 0f 2008.

“This is purposefully being overlooked based on partisan politics by Dalton McGuinty,” said Scott.  “This is an unfortunate Liberal game that is robbing our local communities of a welcome opportunity.”

All five major chartered banks in Canada ranked Ontario ninth of the ten provinces in economic growth.  This is underlined by the over 190,000 manufacturing job losses since 2004.  The program offered in this year’s budget is intended to apply to only 20,000 people.

“The Liberals have put Ontario’s economy on the wrong track.  Jobs and people continue to leave Ontario because of high taxing and heavy regulating McGuinty policies.  It would appear that those 20,000 people are going to be trained to work in another province.”
