McGUINTY LIBERALS VOTE AGAINST FAIRNESS FOR RURAL ONTARIO
(Queen’s Park, Toronto) Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, was both disappointed and surprised today at the McGuinty Liberals, who rejected a Private Member’s Bill that would provide fairness for rural Ontario and allow municipalities throughout the province to share in the provincial gas tax revenue.
“It is most unfair that rural taxpayers are being forced to support urban public transit systems, but receive nothing in return to assist with local roads, highways and bridges,” said Scott. “In Rural Ontario it is the roads, highways and bridges that form our infrastructure; they compose our public transit.”
The legislation, presented by MPP John Yakabuski (Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke), would compel the provincial government to treat municipalities in the same fair way that the federal government is treating them by sharing the gas tax revenue with all municipalities, regardless of whether or not they have a public transportation system.
“This is an issue of fairness for rural Ontario, Municipalities all across this riding and throughout the province have been asking the government for sustainable, predictable funding in order to properly plan,” added Scott. “The bill the Liberals rejected today would have assisted rural municipalities in addressing this issue.”
Scott also pointed to the fact that a number of Liberal representatives, who represent rural ridings and whose constituencies would have benefited from receiving a share of the gas tax revenue, voted against this fairness for their small towns.
“Our municipal politicians are entrusted with the responsibility to make investments according to the priorities of those local municipalities, it’s clear that the McGuinty Liberals aren’t prepared to allow representatives of rural towns to make those decisions,” said Scott.
“Once again the Liberals have denied them their fairness in gas tax money in the province of Ontario.”
