CITIES OF PETERBOROUGH AND LINDSAY NEED
PROPER WATER TESTING FOR LEAD
PC MPP calls on McGuinty Liberals to stop taking shortcuts
with water testing
(LINDSAY, ONTARIO) – Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Victoria-Brock
today said the McGuinty Liberals are not doing enough to protect
the drinking water supply in the cities of Lindsay and Peterborough.
“Dalton McGuinty tried to save face by not making public
the concerns about high levels of lead in Ontario’s water
and has refused to order mandatory testing,” said Scott. “Ontarians
need a government that won’t play politics with their health
by taking shortcuts on proper and complete testing.”
In an April 2007 letter, Ontario’s Chief Water Inspector
recommended that Ontario municipalities test their tap water after
high levels of lead were found in London’s older homes. This
wasn’t made public at the time and was only a suggestion.
It was only after a media spotlight was shone on the McGuinty Liberals
neglect that they issued orders to Ontario municipalities, requiring
them to conduct immediate drinking water tests. But the tests are
deeply flawed and fail to meet water-testing standards of both Health
Canada and the United States, Scott pointed out.
“According to Health Canada guidelines, cities the size of
Kingston, should be testing as many as 100 homes. The McGuinty government
is only testing 20 homes, that is only 25% of what is recommended,”
said Scott.
Both Health Canada and American guidelines require water to remain
stagnant for at least six hours before the water sample is taken,
the issued orders by McGuinty require “flushing” taps
for a full five minutes before taking the sample.
“That’s flushing the evidence right down the drain,”
said Scott.
“Dalton McGuinty promised to implement every recommendation
in Justice Dennis O’Connor’s Walkerton report,”
Scott said. “One of those recommendations was to implement
a plan to replace lead pipes. Four years of Dalton McGuinty and
there is still no plan and we’re hearing about high lead levels
in the water.”
