McGUINTY CONTINUES TO DEFER ENVIORONMENTAL
ACTION
Another day, another photo opportunity for Minister of
the Environment
(Queen’s Park, ON) Dalton McGuinty has once again offered
political spin and rhetoric instead of real leadership and action
on the environment.
After bringing in a truckload of old televisions and monitors for
a photo opportunity, the Minister of the Environment announced a
“plan that might lead to a plan” to divert computers
and IT waste from landfills, which doesn’t start for at least
another eight months - long after the October 10th provincial election.
“Nearly four years into his mandate where he has broken his
promise to make the environment a key ministry, Dalton McGuinty
continues to kick out announcements that don’t mean anything
until after the election,” said Scott. “The Minister
of the Environment completely abandoned her promise to divert 60%
of waste from landfills, and has now delayed presenting her plan
for climate change which was supposed to be delivered on June 11th.”
Other key environmental targets missed by Dalton McGuinty:
|
|
Close the coal plants by 2007 then 2009 then 2011. |
| |
- This target has now been postponed indefinitely.
|
|
60% waste diversion by 2008. |
|
- The McGuinty government is not even halfway to this goal
and has not announced a new target date for meeting this
initiative.
|
|
Implement all the recommendations of Justice O’Connor.
|
|
- According to Dalton McGuinty’s own admission nearly
20 of these recommendations have not been implemented.
|
“We’ve seen this game far too often by Dalton McGuinty
and his lack of commitment to the environment,” added Scott.
“Leadership is much more than words, photos and broken promises.
Leadership is about action and he has proven he’s not prepared
to act.”
