Liberals
Lukewarm to Reforming Postsecondary System
Today
Laurie Scott, Progressive Conservative Critic for Training, Colleges
and Universities heard Bob Rae deliver his report on postsecondary
education, and the tepid response of the government to that report.
“I
was quite frankly surprised at Minister Chambers’ response given
the importance that education issues played in the Liberal’s campaign
promises,” said Laurie Scott. “I
think we can measure their commitment to the postsecondary system
and Ontario’s students by how quickly they act in the upcoming budget.”
The Liberals
made over 230 promises during the last provincial election, and
since their election have developed a record of ignoring the promises
that have a price tag attached.
The
government indicated that they were serious about trying to improve
the postsecondary system when they asked Mr. Rae to engage in this
process. The question that now needs to be answered
is: are they serious about
moving forward on the recommendations that are outlined in the report.
One
of the key recommendations in the report is to bring forward legislation
that enshrines the commitment that every qualified student in Ontario
will find a place in college or university regardless of means.
Laurie Scott is calling upon Minister Chambers to commit
herself to bringing forward legislation so that the legislature
can debate this matter.
"The
government called for a review of our post secondary education system,
raising expectations that they would be ready to take action,"
said Laurie Scott. "Will
they listen to the experts or will this turn out to be just another
broken promise?"
