LIBERALS HAVE A FUNNY DEFINITION OF DEMOCRACY
(Queen’s Park) Joe Tascona and Laurie
Scott were shocked to hear today that the government intends to
use a loophole in the Standing Orders to prevent the Standing Committee
on Government Agencies from reviewing recent appointees as Chair
of the Ontario Municipal Board and the Lottery and Gaming Commission.
“We keep hearing that the Liberal government
is committed to transparency in government” said Laurie Scott.
“This action shows that what the Liberals say, and what they
do are two different things when it comes to transparency and accountability.”
The Standing Committee on Government Agencies
was put in place to allow for the review of intended appointees
to agencies, boards and commissions. The Standing Orders governing
the review of appointees allow for interim appointments of a year
or less.
“It is a dangerous precedent that the
Liberal government is setting here” said Joe Tascona. “It
is shocking that the Liberals would try to avoid public scrutiny
of their appointees.”
The government recently put forward Susan
Wolburgh Jenah to serve as a member and Vice-Chair of the Ontario
Securities Commission. Not being aware of the conflict of interest
that Finance Minster Sorbara is in, neither opposition party called
her to appear before the committee.
Minister Sorbara put forward Ms Jenah to
serve on the OSC while he knew that Royal Group was under investigation
by this board. It is important that the committee have the opportunity
to question Ms. Jenah to ensure that there was no impropriety on
Minister Sorbara’s part.
The Liberal majority on the committee quashed
a request to interview Susan Jenah.
The government has taken a committee that
has always been chaired by an opposition member in the past, and
placed one of their members in the chair spot. Now they are taking
away the right of opposition members to question their appointees.
It seems like the government is trying to avoid public scrutiny
of their appointments.
