Promoting Agriculture and the Rural Lifestyle

Agricultural communities throughout Haliburton-Victoria-Brock are ripe with activities at this exciting time of year during Fair Season.

For those of us who have lived and worked in small communities, this is an annual season that celebrates the wonderful history and traditions of rural Ontario.

According to the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies, there are nearly 24,000 volunteers supporting over 4300 directors that ensure that more than 200 Agricultural Fairs take place in Ontario each year.

Volunteers are indeed at the very heart of what makes Fair Season in Ontario such a great success.  The hours these individuals put forward are countless and I applaud their dedication to maintaining this integral part of Ontario’s Heritage.

Personally, I have been privileged for many years to work with a number of local people who offer their time and talents for the Kinmount Agricultural Society, and create such a wonderful event every Labour Day weekend.

Farmers are the very people who helped build Ontario and the rural towns in Haliburton-Victoria-Brock.  Yet today we are seeing these same farming communities falling behind.  As a province, I think it’s essential that we understand our responsibility to re-invest in the infrastructure that provides the rural way of life for Ontario.  Addressing the situations facing our farmers is essential to fixing the major challenges facing rural Ontario.

Most of us have seen or heard the saying, “Farmer Feed Cities!”  I couldn’t agree more.  Appropriately the theme for the 2007 Agricultural Fair Season is “From Farm to Table.”  We can certainly show support to our farmers through promotion and purchase of their products.  Buying locally grown and produced goods sends a clear message to our businesses and farmers that we believe in their products, their hard work and their commitment to sustaining our rural communities.

There is no question that our farmers produce high-quality products.  There is no question that their work ethic is simply second-to-none.  With the proper approach and leadership Ontario’s farmers and rural communities can once again have a bright future.

If you’ve not yet had a chance to attend an Agricultural Fair yet this season, I encourage you to do so.  Information for some of the local events is listed below.  Further details can be found if you visit the website for the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies at www.ontariofairs.com
