Energy Costs and Wind Turbines

Addressing Hydro Mismanagement

Energy Costs

Without question, the single biggest issue that my constituency office deals with every day is the spiraling cost of energy, particularly as it is reflected on hydro bills.

As a result of the Wynne government’s misguided and mismanaged green energy policies, which have seen outrageous subsidies for the operators of wind and solar energy, the price of hydro has been driven up for everyone.

During the winter, many of our most vulnerable citizens in Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock are forced to make near impossible choices between heating their home or putting food on the table.

Meanwhile, Hydro CEOs are getting outrageous bonuses. When the government announced that they will not do anything to stop the outrageously high salaries paid to hydro company CEOs, I was shocked.

According to the Auditor General, the government also allowed hydro companies to game the system by exploiting one of their poorly managed programs, and making over $260 million of ineligible expense claims.

This type of waste and mismanagement is hurting Ontarians, and I am fighting to stop it.

Wind Turbines

In our riding, nothing has symbolized the fight against these policies than the proposals to erect massive industrial wind turbines in the Manvers, Bethany and Cavan areas.

The community has been nearly unanimous in its opposition to these projects. Municipal councils have passed resolutions clearly denouncing the plans. I have participated in numerous public meetings, attended rallies, given speeches in the Ontario Legislature, written numerous letters to government Ministers and repeatedly asked questions as to why this government is disregarding the expressed wishes of the people.

Despite this, the Ministry of Environment approved the building of five turbines in our riding and rejected appeals, which has further enraged the community.

I remain united with my constituents in opposing these projects and will do everything in my power to help them in continuing the fight.
